Fabulous after 50® Finding Fulfillment For Tomorrow Fabulous after 50® Finding Fulfillment For Tomorrow

What an awesome time to be FABULOUS AFTER 50®! We are stepping over the threshold of the new millennium. The explosion of knowledge and communication will thrust us into new beginnings, adventures, and ways of thinking and living. Four weeks before the opening of the Olympic games, a lighted torch (a stick of wood dipped in tallow or oil, and set ablaze at the end to provide light that can be carried about) is brought by relay runners from the valley of Olympia, Greece, where the original games were held, to the host country. Ships and planes transport the Olympic torch over the seas and mountains. The final runner carries the torch into the stadium, makes a dramatic pass around the track, followed by all participating athletes, and then lights the Olympic flame. As the flame transfers from the runner's torch to the stationary torch the Olympic ceremonies begin. The Baby Boomers will be the torchbearers into the new millennium to light the flame for women living longer and better, with style, power, good health, and zeal.

Fabulous after 50® Finding Fulfillment for Tomorrow, written in the crucible of life, will inflame aging women with a passion to re-fire, not retire. The flame of the future is a new mental posture for women — feeling younger while growing older, and getting better while aging.

Our objective for Fabulous after 50® is to provide emotional, spiritual, and psychological wisdom, support, and guidance for women moving into the second half of life. Fabulous after 50® addresses every woman's longing to impact the lives of others, to make every moment count, and to live a legacy of love. With Fabulous after 50®, we defy America's bias that younger is better. Our desire is to give women mile markers for getting better, not just older, and to help all of us improve with age. To be enthusiastic about aging is almost an oxymoron; however, more mature women are becoming empowered to live their very best each day, and leading enjoyable, productive lives. As expectations change for women in this new millennium, this book will propel them forward, clarify their calling, and give them clearer directions.

Fabulous after 50®, by National Author/Writer/Syndicated Columnist/Speaker & Celebrity Radio Talk Show HostShirley W. Mitchell, covers a wide range of issues that concern women. This is a bookstore in a book, covering emotional and spiritual issues, as well as physical realities such as proper diet, exercise, hormones, and menopause. Extensive research from secular and Christian sources give balance to this book. The "Immediate Application" format provides questions at the end of each chapter, making Fabulous after 50® practical and applicable, both in our personal lives and in group settings.

The chapter "In the Jaws of Menopause" is an actual interview with Dr. James C. Upchurch, GYN, M.D. as he guided Shirley successfully through her own menopause. It will offer fresh hope as you approach this often-dreaded time.

Shirley's sister, Debra K. Goodwin, Registered Dietitian, guided her into healthy eating habits for a mature woman, and will now guide the reader, in the chapter "Debunking the Diet Mysteries: Eating Right."

After attending Dr. Ken Dychtwald's "Age Wave Institute" in New York, Shirley caught his passion for making the latter years super years. The seed planted there in her fertile mind germinated into this book. Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, author of "We Live Too Long and Die Too Short' and "Dare to Be 100", put an indelible groove into Shirley's brain to "use it or lose it."

We are delighted to invite you to run with the torch of ageless living into the new millennium. We hope you will find life is truly Fabulous after 50®.

"With almost eighty million baby boomers riding the Age Wave into maturity, aging well suddenly has become a major focus in our society. I'm pleased that Fabulous after Fifty™ boldly speaks to this generation." ...Dr. Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., Author of "Age Wave" & "Age Power"

"As I finished reading Fabulous After Fifty™, I had the unmistakable feeling that I was ten years younger than when I started. Its energy is contagious. Be careful, you might catch it" ...Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., Author of "We Live Too Short and Die Too Long: How to Achieve And Enjoy Your Natural 100-year-plus Life Span " and "Dare To Be 100: 99 Steps to a Long, Healthy Life"

"The Women's Educational Encyclopedia"... An Emergence to Enlighten those into a New Era of Aging - to be "Fabulous" above, beyond, and after your beginning of the Second Half of Life. The Ph.D. for "The Golden Years" ...Lighthouse Coastal Productions

by Shirley W. Mitchell, Syndicated Columnist

The wave of the future is a new mental posture for over-50 people. Many healthy folks, enjoying the last half of life are feeling younger, fit and energetic. I'm inviting you to get excited about being strong enough to have lived 50 years or more of life. You have survived the tides of disease and accident. Congratulations.

Thinking one could prove to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. With this positive mindset, we jump deeper into life with anticipation. Aging is no longer considered a time in life to avoid or fear. It is a natural growth process. Fear is not of God. God gives us the spirit of power, love and sound mind. Father Time and Mother Nature do not put us on an inevitable sentence of being old. Living old is a choice.

The attitude that each new day is a special gift from the Master's hand will keep us drinking the fountain of youth. God hands us a package of 1,440 new unused minutes each day to be spent in the manner we choose. At the end of the day, our 1,440 minutes are gone forever. We cannot save them or carry them over to the next day. Each new day is a new life.

God in His infinte wisdom givers each of us only one moment at a time. We only deal with the moment. Look at an hourglass. One grain of sand passes through the narrow part of the hourglass at a time. That is how God gives us one moment at a time. As the moments turn into days, we have the opportunity to make each day a pearl. At the end of our long lives we will have a string of pearls.

Helen Keller made her life a string of pearls. Although the Alabama girl was blind, and deaf, she became an international symbol of strength and achievement. She wrote that external conditions are the accidents of life it's outer wrappings. She also urged others to "Resolve to keep happy and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulty."

Older can be better. Like superior wine, ageless people mellow and refine with age. Experience brings with it deeper more interesting beauty, combining body, mind and spirit. The fountain of aging is overflowing with a savvy, gray-haired power group. As a member of this power group, I hope you take the positive encouragement of this column to make the best in your life.

"Ann George stopped me at the grocery store. She said, "Shirley, thank you for writing "Fabulous after 50®". Your grandaughter gave it to me at the end of school. I took it on vacation with me. I read every word while sunning on the beach. I have had a bought with cancer. I have decided not to let cancer be the focal point of my life. Your book has encouraged me not to allow aging to be a negative but a positive. Like cancer, aging will not destroy my blessed life."... Ann George, Albertville-AL

"You are a very accomplished writer, creating a sense of motivation to your readers with "Fabulous after 50®" & "Sensational after 60®".  May "THE LORD," continue to enlighten your endeavors to help women all over the world."... Carol Harder, Santa Rosa, Ca.

Mar. 29, 2002 - "My thanks to Shirley W. Mitchell and you for writing this helpful book. I turned 50 last November and must admit I wasn't feeling very optimistic about the future. I am a Pharmacy Technician and hear many seniors say, 'don't get old.' I listen as they share their struggles with illness, pain, loneliness etc. every day. My heart goes out to them in their suffering, while leading me to fearfully contemplate my own future. "I have read 3 chapters in the book so far and have them uplifting, hopeful and inspiring. Thank you for writing these words of encouragement. They have served to remind me that our hope, our joy, and our future are in Christ our Lord and Saviour, even as we enter our "golden years"... Way to go, friend! Thank you Lord

Aug. 13, 2003 - "Dear Shirley, Here it is Wednesday already. I want to thank so very much for giving me your book Fabulous After Fifty™. Truthfully, I wasn't quite sure what I was about to read; I soon found out that this book will be read over and over again. This is definitely a book of treasured truths. I am in Chapter 4 as I write and feel the spirit through and through. As I read your quote from John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life", I reflected back to my childhood for I must have read this scripture a million times. Now in my life that statement is significant and better understood than ever before. With that understanding come great peace and hope. I loved and whole-heartedly agreed with Carolyn's statement, "Fabulous women are good listeners and givers". You mention attitude, and talk about how age has no dates in time but a state of mind. Did you know that if you gave the word ATTITUDE a numerical value it equals 100. Example a=1, t=20 and so forth. As I taught my 11 year olds in Sunday School that attitude only comes from within, no one else gives us this gift. We can either give 100% of ourselves in what we do or we short change our soul. Thank you for enjoying the small but sweet joys in life as you were lifted with joy as one small rose was left by your bedside while you were sick. We are jewels in the eyes of our Heavenly Father, we are here to learn of Him and His son Jesus Christ. And while we study His characteristics we can too learn more about our selves and know that we are sons and daughters of God. Shirley, it is my prayer that we will meet again as you come to the Washington D. C. area in October. The past four months I was able to attend a class at work given by Melanie Moeller entitled Our Own Best Self. I love to look deep into others and well as myself. I love to try to find good in everyone and find out the what and why for the wants in life. This class gave much food for thought on introspection. Today was our last class and unfortunately I missed two-thirds of it. But the last 20 minutes were writing our "diva". I found that a bit provocative at first and then was able to listen to what everyone wrote. You could just hear an inner self ring out and it was overwhelmingly joyful. After class, I mentioned I was honored to meet you Sunday at the LAX airport and was reading your book. Melanie would very much like to talk with you and perhaps having you speak to women in our area. She is with Horizons Consulting and if you will let me know I can set up a call with Melanie. Perhaps this would be in congruence with your Washington trip.I would like to keep in touch as I mentioned before and as soon as I get my pictures developed I'll scan it in and send you a copy. Shirley, I am not the greatest composer of letters but I am a good listener and follower of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I know without a shadow of a doubt He loves each one of us individually and knows us by name. I know that if we follow His teachings and keep His commandments that we too will have eternal life. I say this in His Holy Name. Amen. It's 11.16P.M. and I must say I need to retire for the night. Thank you again for all that you do for women everywhere. Let me not forget to say hello to your beautiful and articulate granddaughters. They are precious."... Sincerely, Sally Michaux

Nov. 10, 2003 - "Dear Shirley, Your book was terrific! I am one who believes in all of the principles you bring forth. You are strongly founded on the Word and you are one of the few who embrace the whole picture... spiritual, emotional, mental and the physical aspects to the abundant life! You were so "right on" about exercise and keeping ourselves attractive so that our witness shines brighter. You have done a wonderful job! I would like permission to recommend you as a workshop leader for next year's Focus Over Fifty Conference at Focus on the Family which will be Sept. 9-12. May I do so??? Women will FLOCK to this workshop. I loved the questions and motivations at the end of each chapter. I would like to order 10 books as they will be perfect gifts to my dearest friends. Just ship them with an invoice and include shipping. My Bible study tries to do a "girl trip" every other year. Three years ago, those who were not certified, got certified and we went scuba diving in Grand Cayman! Ha! I have been speaking some on Finding Fresh Significance after Fifty. I spoke on a few Halftime Conferences with Bob Buford. I am very big on helping women find significance and discovering how wonderful God has made them. So it seems that we have much of the same mission in life. Also, let me know how you handle a days woman's conference in a large church. We attend First United Methodist in Tulsa. It is one of the largest Methodist churches in the country and is a very strong Biblically based church."... I hope to hear from you soon, Blessings, Rosalind Cook

Jun. 15, 2004 - "I met you at BAM book store in Peachtree City, Ga. , on June 12th, 2004 and purchased your "Fabulous after 50®" book.  Needless to say I am well after 50 but your words of wisdom was so inspiring and appropriate for any age. I truly enjoyed reading your book. When your next book "Sexy after 60" then "Heavenly after Seventy" come out, I want to know.  I need to see what I may be missing. You are a beautiful lady Shirley Mitchell; thank you for your words of wisdom."... Sincerely, Willie Lamb

Jun. 4, 2011 - "Whatever  you need to know about being 50-ish, Female, and Fabulous is in this book. A great resource to keep you optimistic and focused as you reach (and pass) the milestone of turning 50. Mitchell and Rubietta are obviously well read and quote from a wide variety of materials to give the most up to date information, as well as, inspiration. The book was first printed in 2000, but was in its third printing by 2004 - a great testimony to its relevance. In less than 200 pages topics from health, diet, and exercise to fashion, hair and skin care, to volunteerism are covered. Just about every aspect of life is discussed. Each of the eleven chapter end with "Questions for immediate Application," a list of "Strategies," and an "Aging Successfully Attitude."  There is plenty of (good) attitude throughout the book, softened by a love for the Lord and spiced with humor. A very honest book and well worth the read. By the way, I met Shirley Mitchell in April 2011 and I can say that, without a doubt, she follows her own advice. She was very delightful and looked...fabulous! Be sure to visit her website. www.fabulousafter50.com. Disclaimer: This book was reviewed without the knowledge of the authors and therefore no payment was made to me. Ms. Mitchell and I met at an author event and swapped books as one writer to another. The possibility of a review was not even mentioned"... Julie Dobbins

Boomers - The Electic Society

By the year 2030, the Baby Boomers will be aged 66-84 and will make up about 20% of the total population. They will have immense spending power with the potential to change how America does business, since the goods and services sought by these older people will be in a much higher demand. We know too, that boomers have healthy incomes and spend a great deal of money, we also know that they're not saving as much as they should and that their retirement income will be less stable than that of previous generations. Baby Boomers have a higher level of education and are considered to have a higher divorce rate than prior generations. Their "estimated" annual spending power is between $2-$3 trillion.

A call to action for Boomers to spend less, save more and focus on financial planning for their later years would be an important step to take considering the recent economic downturn. While the 50 plus group has more financial resources than any other demographic, business are missing out by continuing to focus on the 15-35 year olds. Women are responsible for 80% of all family spending. The generation that vowed to stay forever young is coming up on a major milestone. But for the 3.4 million Americans who were born in 1946, retirement is a distant prospect, and life still holds plenty of promise and surprises.

The Pew Internet study estimates that about 11%, or about 50 million of Internet users are regular blog readers. According to Technorati, there are about 70,000 new blogs a day. Bloggers... people who write weblogs... update their weblogs regularly, and there are about 700,000 posts daily, or about 29,100 blog updates an hour. 63 million people 50 years of age and over access the Internet. At least half (31 Million) are women. A Boomer will hit age 50 years of age every 7 seconds until 2014 and over half of those will be women. Women account for 52% of home Internet users and those 50 years of age are among the fastest growing groups online.

The U.S. Census Bureau projects by 2050 there will be 1.1 million centenarians in America alone, and researchers at Boston University estimate that roughly 3 million baby boomers will live to be 100 or older. What does this mean for our society, in terms of the economy, health care, political and social trends, and more? What kind of business and service will thrive and which will not with these kinds of changes in demographics? What are the best ways for society and individuals to prepare for the aging population? We have a great deal to think about and act on !
